September 19th is dedicated to fostering a spirit of volunteerism across South Africa, a place where this concept is not yet common. I asked the journalists if there were any volunteer projects going on in their community that day. They said no. They had never heard of “Do It Day” before reading it in the most recent issue of the Villager. I wondered, if they could do something for their community, what would it be? Below are their reponses.
Linky: Something that would take the children off the streets. You find that under eighteens are getting pregnant, so maybe if they could do something after school to keep them busy.
Cosi: Be a volunteer caregiver. I would like to look after vulnerable children and teach more people about HIV/AIDS.
I hope that in future years “Do It Day” becomes a well-known and fully celebrated South African holiday.
